Oh the places we'll go and the places we've been.......
Flip or Flop 2019
Right before the news of their split, Flip or Flop celebrity couple Tarek & Christina El Moussa were filming an F&F episode in my neighborhood. I'm a fan of the show so I was intrigued to see how they actually do this.
It took a few months, and lots (and lots) of workers - you didn't really think Tarek & Christina do the physical stuff themselves, did you?
One morning I was outside gardening when a big black SUV pulled up. Tarek stepped from the passenger side, and some guy (personal driver?) stepped out from the driver side. I also noticed a shiny new white Bentley parked a few houses down (trust me, this is not a neighborhood filled with Bentleys & Rolls Royces - this is a Jeep, Toyota, Honda kind of 'hood), and Christina was in front of the F&F home with a camera crew. It hit me as kind of strange that Christina & Tarek were not traveling together, and it appeared they were not speaking to each other that day..... Little did I (or anyone) know they were actually in the middle of a divorce right then - I give 'em props for being able to continue to work together!
Anyway - when Tarek returned to his car a few hours later, I walked over and said hello. He was so kind, and very chatty. I told him that I was also a cancer survivor and was glad to hear that he was doing great and was cancer free, like me! He actually gave me a hug and invited me to the open house coming up in a few weeks ! He was very genuine, seems like a good, down to earth, kind of guy.
A few weeks later the camera crew showed up to film the finale, so I decided to check it out. There was a small crowd of about 10 people (none of them my neighbors, no idea who they were, so weird!) I even met a lady that is a Flip or Flop super fan, she knew every filming location and seemed to "stalk" the show from location to location - in a friendly, super fan, kind of way. They did not allow us in the home just yet, but we watched from the front yard as they filmed Tarek putting the "For Sale" sign on the side walk. As the crew set up the next scene they asked us to step in to the garage to get out of the cameras angle - then they closed the garage door - eeek! We all watched, silently, as Tarek & Christina stood at the front door waiting for the cue to enter - you could cut the tension with a knife! Christina had a dead stare at the front door and Tarek looked terrified. When the cue was given Tarek actually patted his heart a couple of times and blew out a big breath before walking in. He could be heard saying "Honey, we're home" !
When they finally finished that scene we were allowed to walk through the house and see the transformation. While walking through the kitchen I locked eyes with Christina sitting on the coffee table - full make up ( I remember the beautiful, huge eyelashes) big hair, and really cute boots. I pointed to the lovely hanging light in the kitchen and said "I love the light you chose for the kitchen" - She actually rolled her eyes, sighed heavily and said a very pained, sarcastic "Thank You" - it was as if it physically hurt her to make the effort to speak to me. I raised my eyebrows and moved on (and thought to myself "How very rude"). The house was pretty nice, the transformation was amazing, and it boosted the property value around the neighborhood! win/win
It's funny to watch the episode now, after experiencing a few filming moments.....and to find out that while this was being filmed they were right in the thick of their soon-to-be VERY public divorce. So, I take back thinking Christina was rude towards me -knowing what she was going through at the time. I had 'those' days where I thought the world was out to get me while going through my NOT very public divorce, and still had to show up for work and smile at the public every darn day - it was tough.
Tarek is still my favorite though :-)
